FLS – Considering the Media

Common ways family’s experience media impact:

  • They feel unable to get away from news feeds.
  • There is false news about loved one and situation.
  • Family may find they themselves are in the news.
  • Experiencing the impact of ‘everyone’ knowing about their situation.
  • Finding they are being stalked by journalists and photographers.
  • Feeling helpless to influence the media.
  • Finding it is impacting on relationships: It can trigger friends and acquaintances to either get in touch (overwhelming contact) or avoid them (feeling isolated/judged).

Simple steps too reduce the impact:

  • Review privacy setting on social media accounts.
  • Reduce time on social media and following news.
  • Have a plan for if it gets overwhelming – such as temporarily coming off social media; staying with a friend.
  • Have a friend or family member as designated person to reach out to, for help.
  • Have a plan of where you will reach out for professional support.
