PTSD Aw – Signs and Symptoms of Chronic Stress

With chronic stress a degree of the fight/flight (stress) response has been sustained over a prolonged period of time. The impact of higher levels of stress hormone, and the strain placed on the body because of that, can create ‘wear and tear’.

It is not unusual for people to have visited their GP for one or several signs and symptoms of chronic stress, and the GP has been unable to find any specific cause.

Typical sign & symptoms

  • Difficulty with attention, concentration, decision making, short term memory
  • High blood pressure
  • Palpitations
  • Raised cholesterol
  • Digestive issues (e.g. IBS, bloating, nausea, loss appetite)
  • Headaches and muscle tension, tremors or shaking
  • Skin rashes
  • Blurred vision
  • Weakened immune system
  • Tingling, dizziness

Managing the impact of chronic stress requires people to be proactive in:

  • Managing the number and intensity of stressors impacting them where possible
  • Not taking on too much at any one time
  • Looking after their mental health, by being proactive in applying coping/ resilience strategies
  • Looking after their physical health
