Prepare for the session:

Assess

  • Evaluate physical safety – is the event/situation over?
  • Consider risk – are there ongoing dangers where the person will be or where you will be providing support?
  • Ethics of providing support – are you the right person to be providing support? Is there a conflict of interest (e.g. dual roles); is your wellbeing adequate; is your training knowledge adequate (fresh)?

  • About crisis/situation you are being asked to support – what happened, when, where; are you being expected to support one person or several?
  • Other support services – Understand the availability and contact details for additional support that you can refer to
  • Other considerations? – E.g. is person in a country where suicide is illegal? If so, what is the plan to support people if you have high risk safety concerns? Your role being covered whilst you provide PFA support.

  • Where will you be providing support from – is there adequate privacy?
  • How – By what means will you be providing support (Face to face; remote video call; via telephone); do you have everything you need to work via that means
