When we are functioning within our ‘Window of Tolerance’ you are more likely to feel calm and comfortable in your body and:
- Able to take in and remember information
- Able to communicate our thoughts and feelings to others.
When someone has experienced prolonged stress, difficulties with mental health or been traumatised and the body and nervous system become dysregulated and the window of tolerance will likely shrink:
- Things people were able to do before with ease become difficult or impossible
- People may find themselves spending more time hypo-aroused or hyper-aroused than in their window of tolerance.
The ‘resources’ we employ to maintain our psychological wellbeing are the same resources that will help maintain or grow the window of tolerance.
